Create extraction rules
This page helps Utility Manager reviewers turn repeated bill corrections into deterministic rules for future matching bills. Use it when the same vendor, account, component label, unit, or date pattern keeps requiring the same correction.
Before you start
- You need Utility Manager write access.
- Choose a parsed or reviewable utility bill as the source bill.
- Preview is required before saving a rule.
- Notification and review action blocks may be visible for planning, but they are not live automation actions yet.
Extraction rules should improve future matching bills. Do not create a rule from a one-off document problem unless you expect the same pattern to repeat.
Open Workflow Builder
Open Workflow Builder or select Open in Workflow Builder from a supported bill review context.
Add a trigger
Choose Utility bill parsed for future parsed-bill events or Manual run to test against one current source bill.
Choose a source bill
Open the Source bill inspector and select a parsed or reviewable utility bill. Review Summary, Fields, and Components before configuring the rule.
Add an extraction rule
Choose an enabled extraction rule such as Use one field to fill another, Keep or ignore matching bill components, or Rewrite component fields. Configure scope, matching values, and action details.
Preview and save
Select Preview selected rule. If the preview is correct and no duplicate active rule exists, select Save.
What happens next
Parsepoint activates the extraction rule. Future matching bills use the rule, and the source bill may refresh if the save applied the rule to the current bill.
If you do not see this option
Workflow Builder may be hidden by module access, organization settings, or feature availability. Utility extraction controls are locked unless you have Utility Manager write access.
Troubleshooting
- Utility Manager write access required: ask an admin to update your access.
- Choose a source bill: select a parsed or reviewable Utility Bill before adding saveable rules.
- Duplicate active rule exists: open or disable the existing rule, or change the selector or scope.
- Preview before saving: run the preview after every rule or scope change.
